Nothing compares to competing on home soil for British Triathlon star Tom Bishop
Tom Bishop was an enthusiastic spectator during Triathlon at the London 2012 Olympic Games, but he wants to be competing for real when the next major sporting event to be held in Britain arrives in the form of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.
Triathlon is one of six sports taking place as part of Glasgow 2018 alongside the existing European Championships for Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics and Rowing plus a new Golf Team Championships at Gleneagles.
Around 160 of the top triathletes on the continent will compete for European glory at Strathclyde Country Park between 9 – 11 August 2018, with individual male and female events taking place alongside a thrilling mixed relay event. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here
As one of British most exciting triathlon talents, Derby-born Bishop is determined to seal his place at Glasgow 2018 and contribute to the sport’s ‘booming’ reputation within Scotland and the UK.
The 26-year-old said: "It would be awesome to compete at a European Championships in Britain. I was a spectator at the London 2012 Olympics and to hopefully be a part of something like that next year would be amazing."
"You can’t really beat a home crowd. I’ve competed all over the world but it doesn’t really compare to competing in front of British fans."
"I really think next year will live up to the standard that Great Britain has set. Triathlon is on a boom at the moment. I was fortunate enough to represent Great Britain at the European Games in Baku and I was part of the team who won gold. That was probably one of the best experiences of my career and it would have been ten-times better at home."
Bishop currently sits in fourth place in the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Series Rankings following impressive finishes at the opening race in Abu Dhabi, where he finished second, and in Leeds where he took fifth place.
The British triathlete will be looking to strengthen his position in the rankings this weekend when the ITU World Triathlon Series arrives in Hamburg and Bishop is taking confidence from his previous races.
He added: "I headed into my first race (in Abu Dhabi where he finished 2nd) pretty confident as to how I was going to perform. I ended up having the best result of my career so far by a mile, and I was absolutely delighted."
"Confidence is a huge thing in this sport because we all train so hard. Day-to-day, everyone performs at a similar level, but it’s all about confidence and that mental approach that takes you to the next level. I feel that I have that now, and I’m going from one race to the next knowing that I can do well, step up and deliver what I need to do."
