Country Profile - Republic of Ireland
Republic of Ireland | Eire
Population: 4.75 million
Capital City: Dublin
Interesting fact: At 192 miles - as the crow flies - Dublin is the closest European capital city to Glasgow (Slightly closer than the 2973 miles to Astana in Kazakhstan!). We're excited for Irish sports fans to take the short trip over the North Channel this August.
STAR ATHLETE | THE O'DONOVAN BROTHERS (ROWING)
We say star athlete but there is no way we can seperate Ireland's famous O'Donovan brothers! Paul and Gary were crowned European lightweight double sculls champions in 2016 and backed it up with an historic silver medal win at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Ireland's first Olympic rowing medal. Were beaten to Gold at last year's European Rowing Championships by Frenchmen Pierre Houin and Jérémie Azou, so will be hungry to reclaim their title at #Glasgow2018.
ONE TO WATCH | RYAN MULLEN (ROAD CYCLING)
May not be a household name yet, but Irish cyclist Ryan Mullen is certainly one of the most exciting names on the road cycling circuit at the moment. Clinched bronze behind Belgian gold medallist Victor Campenaerts and Poland’s Maciej Bodnar at last year's European Road Championships Time Trial and has already said he's excited at the prospect of going for Gold in Glasgow.
